FlowProofs vs Tableau
A Tableau alternative for teams without a data team.
Tableau is superb at visual exploration. Small teams mostly need to explain five numbers well.
The short version
Use Tableau if you have analysts who explore large datasets visually every day, need a wide range of chart types, or run Tableau Prep pipelines into governed data sources.
Use FlowProofs if nobody on the team is a full-time analyst, the audience is a manager or a client, and you want to pay for the people who build, not the people who look.

Where Tableau is better
Exploring data you have never seen
Drag a dimension, drag a measure, see a chart. Tableau's VizQL is still the fastest way for a trained analyst to find something in a dataset. FlowProofs assumes you already know what you want to show.
Chart range and polish
Maps, scatter plots, box plots, dual axes, custom shapes. If the visual itself is the deliverable, Tableau gives you far more control than we do.
Scale and governance
Published data sources, certified content, permissions by project, extracts on large warehouses. A data team running reporting for a whole company needs that machinery.
Community
Tableau Public hosts years of shared work to learn from, and there is a user group in most cities.
Where FlowProofs is better
No analyst required
If you can write a formula in Excel, you can build a canvas. There are no LOD expressions to learn and no difference between a dimension and a measure to get wrong.
Pay for builders only
At list price, a team with two Creators and twenty Viewers pays for twenty-two Tableau seats. On FlowProofs the twenty viewers open a link for free.
The story, not just the chart
A canvas lets you draw that Revenue is Traffic times Conversion times AOV, and that Conversion is the one that moved. That shape is often the whole answer.
Set up in one sitting
Upload a spreadsheet or connect Google Sheets and you are building. There is no server, site or data source to publish first.
Can you use both?
If your analysts already live in Tableau, keep them there for exploration. Tableau is good at finding the answer.
Then use FlowProofs to present it to the people without Tableau licences: the founder, the client, the regional lead. Export the result set to CSV or connect the same database, and build the canvas around the finding.
- Power BI is great. It's also too much for most reports. Is Power BI too complex for your reports? An honest look at when DAX and data modelling earn their keep, when they don't, and what simpler setups look like.
- What a metric tree is, and why it beats a KPI dashboardA metric tree breaks one number into the numbers that make it up. A worked example, how to build one in a spreadsheet, and where KPI dashboards fall short.
- Data storytelling for people who hate the phrase "data storytelling"Data storytelling without the buzzwords: practical rules for presenting numbers in a meeting. One question per view, show the driver, and show the source.

Questions
Is FlowProofs cheaper than Tableau?
For most small teams, yes, mainly because viewers are free. A Tableau Viewer seat lists at $15 per user per month, billed annually; FlowProofs charges nothing to view.
Can I bring my Tableau workbooks over?
Not the workbook files. Export the data behind them to CSV or Excel, or connect the same source, and rebuild the few views that matter as a canvas.
Does FlowProofs have as many chart types?
No. It has bar, line, area and pie charts and numbers inside shapes. If you need maps or scatter plots, Tableau is the better tool.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. 5 canvases, 3 data files and unlimited viewers, free. Tableau Public is free too, but everything you publish there is public.
